Personal growth and leadership was a key area of focus at MGMA 2017 Annual Conference. In the months since the event, it is difficult to think back to being in Anaheim without recognizing that theme of empowerment throughout the sessions.

From the opening general session with Oscar- and Tony-winning actress Viola Davis to the final session on Oct. 11, the idea that physician practice leaders must begin with their own personal development and understanding of the healthcare industry carried throughout the topics.

This episode of the MGMA Small Talk podcast revisits some key takeaways from the MGMA 2017 Annual Conference, including:

    • Halee Fischer-Wright, MD, MMM, FAAP, CMPE, MGMA president and chief executive officer, on bringing the art of medicine back into balance with the science and business sides of providing care
    • Tracy Spears, co-founder, Exceptional Leaders Lab, Tulsa, Okla., on the importance of building strong teams within a medical practice.
    • Former MGMA Small Talk guest Frank Cohen, MBB, MBA, MGMA member, director of analytics, Doctors Management LLC, Clearwater, Fla., on the future of predictive analytics for practice leaders
    • Kate Goodrich, MD, director and chief medical officer, Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Baltimore, discussing how CMS approaches quality reporting programs such as the Merit-Based Incentive Payments System (MIPS)

Many members were not able to attend due to recent natural disasters, and those who were able to attend did so with the knowledge that they would return home with many challenges ahead of them. Others — notably, MGMA’s 2017 Harwick Innovation Award winner Peter Valenzuela, MD, MBA, CMPE, MGMA member, chief medical officer, Sutter Medical Group of the Redwoods, Santa Rosa, Calif. — cut their plans short for Annual Conference due to the wildfires in Northern California. If you are interested in helping recovery efforts, please consider efforts organized by GoFundMe or the American Red Cross.
